*Cascading Curses* James Dean: Destined to Die Young

When one unfortunate event begins a series of tragic coincidences it has the tendency to evolve into a curse. The more coincidences that are involved, the more likely people are to believe otherworldly factors have come into play– the circumstances are just too unwieldy to be anything but the result of a curse!

A series of tragic events that link back to the death of a young up-and-coming actor have managed to achieve a level of curse that only a series of coincidence of this magnitude can afford.

James Byron Dean lived life in the fast lane, so it comes as no surprise that this “Rebel Without a Cause” spent his last moments of life behind the wheel of a car.

Buried Treasure: Saddle Ridge Hoard

In the coin collecting world, part of what adds to a coin’s value, besides the quality of the coin, is the story that goes along with it, and these coins have a whopper of a tale to tell.

One morning in February 2013, a couple living in northern California was out walking their dog on their property– in California gold country. One of them saw an old, moss-covered tin can that was half-buried in the mud. They used a stick to dig the can out and scrape the can clean. When the can, which was sealed on both ends, was opened it revealed a treasure trove of gold coins.

Famous School House from ‘The Birds’ is Actually a Haunted Home

1

There are photos of the house on the original HuffPo story linked below the quote. 🙂 It’s a lovely home.

It’s safe to say some of the scariest scenes from Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds” took place at the Potter School House in California. But we bet you didn’t know that ever since 1963, this once abandoned spot has mostly remained a private residence.

Our friends at California Home & Design explored the house, which now belongs to Leah Taylor. When Taylor’s parents purchased the school house, the windows were boarded, there wasn’t a staircase, holes were in the roof and naturally, there was a piano covered in bird droppings. But perhaps the most unusual experience was when one morning Taylor and her family heard, but could not see, someone screaming “it’s Sunday morning!”

And while the home has been fixed up to be completely habitable, the paranormal situations haven’t stopped. “Sometimes there is the very clear sound of party noises, a cacophony of people talking at once,” Taylor said. “Other times, there are the sounds of children laughing, or footsteps.”

More ghost towns

3

Of course not every ghost town really looks like a ghost town. There are a few – like Bodie, CA – where buildings exist in a state of “arrested decay” and others, like Virginia City, NV where people still live in the towns even though they’re designated as ghost towns.

I hit another jackpot on Yahoo where they have a list of nine ghost towns in the US that typically date to the 19th century. The link at the end will be where you can see photos and read information about the history of these towns. Also, if you enjoy ghost towns as much as I do, a great resource for ghost town exploration is ghostowns.com. It is a very well organised site and will tell you how to get there – if you can drive up by car, if you have to rent a 4×4 or if you have to abandon motorized vehicles of all kinds and simply hike. The ones in Colorado and parts of Nevada and California are where you’ll typically find those.

These are the sites listed on the Yahoo article:

  • Rhyolite, NV
  • Bodie, CA
  • St Elmo and Tincup, CO
  • Calico, CA
  • Ashcroft, CO
  • Grafton, UT
  • Gleeson, AZ
  • Kennecott, AK
  • Fairbank, AZ

Murderous May: Dating Game Killer

In 1968, a 25 year old Rodney Alcala was convicted of the rape and attempted murder of an 8 year old girl in California. He had taken her off the street, brought her back to his apartment and sexually assaulted her.  Then he hit her over the head with a metal pipe, intending to kill her.  Luckily, before he could make sure the gruesome job was finished, the police came knocking at his door.  A concerned citizen had seen the young girl getting into a car with unmarked tags and had followed them to the apartment building and called the authorities.  Police found the child in a pool of blood.
